Strictly speaking, a negligee is a filmy dressing gown worn over one's night attire, usually a nightie. The word negligee though, was attributed to commercially available 'sets' of both nightie and dressing gown which matched. The nightie was usually opaque and the dressing gown filmy and transparent and they were quite lovely. I had one given to me at around the age of 10 years in the late sixties. It was made out of pink nylon with scratchy lace detailing on the upper bodice and neck of the filmy dressing gown! Fortunately the nightie was comfortable if not a little hot.

A negligee would not be complete without a pair of boudoir slippers. Those slip on, heeled beauties with the feathers on the vamp is the style which comes to mind. They had to be satin of course and they had to compliment the negligee so they were very often the same colour.
