The cocktail dress is legend! The link below gives a marvellous history of this iconic garment and describes the dress thus:
'She emerged at private cocktail soirées and lounges, and the cocktail dress, as a short evening sheath with matching hat, shoes, and gloves was designated to accompany her...[being the drinking woman].'
That description best fits my idea of what the cocktail dress was all about; a sleek, interesting garment (and sexy of course), which was easy to wear and accessorize. But there are many alternative styles of the cocktail dress which are no less appealing.
My absolute favourite out of all of the searches I've done is this beauty below:
This dress, by Balenciaga (1959) is simply divine in my opinion. It's interesting, it's a beautiful design and the colour and quality of the fabric is fabulous!
I've chosen images of the cocktail dress that really appeal to me. Some for their quirkiness others simply for their beauty:
'1960's Teal blue satin brocade vintage cocktail dress
Simple cut sleeveless fitted dress with wide boat neck and low back.
The heavy gold brocade fabric is fantastic and really catches the light,.
The embroidered jacqaurd design is a floral magnolia trellis in textured gold lame and shaded in black on a teal blue duchess satin ground.'
